BIOGRAPHY

Colleen graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing in 1999 after doing an international placement in Nijmegan, Netherlands in pediatric neurosurgery. After readjusting to Canadian healthcare, she worked as a graduate nurse in High Level, Alberta at a rural hospital for the first six months, primarily as a perinatal nurse. A poster on the wall one day advertising a critical care course in Edmonton lead to a 10 year love of critical care nursing in the sub-specialties of med/surg, trauma, neuro at the Royal Alexandra hospital, and cardiac ICU (Cardiac Surgery) in London Ontario. Still interested in international opportunities, she also worked in Connecticut for public and private hospitals in ICU for a short 3 month contract. Although providing direct patient and family care will always be at the heart of what she is as a nurse, Colleen also has a passion for teaching. She has taught in the clinical and classroom settings at the University of Alberta, and clinical at Western University in London, ON, in a full and part time basis since graduation. In 2009, her husband got a tenure track job in the Okanagan (Human Kinetics), and so began her journey building the Interior Health cardiac program as the original program educator. In that role she taught the adult critical care course, telemetry and advanced cardiac critical care, was a BCLS and ACLS instructor, and was part of the team that created the IH Pritchard simulation lab at Kelowna General Hospital. After successfully supporting the roll out of the PCI program, and the Cardiac Surgery program, she then transitioned to a Cardiac Triage Nurse for the IH Regional Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and the IH Cardiac Surgery program. Returning to academia and education, Colleen is now completing her MN degree here at UBC-O and joined the School of Nursing in the role of Lab & Simulation Coordinator in the summer of 2015.

Basic Cardiac & Telemetry Course

Prepared and delivered a 5 day course that is offered in house to prepare RNs currently working in medical surgical units or the ED who want to work in a cardiac specialty area or apply for the critical care course.
Annual Skills days – used the high fidelity Sim Man 3G to teach cardiovascular skills.

Adult Critical Care Course
Course Instructor (Sept ‘10, Sept ’11, Jan ‘12)
Taught the in-class and lab Cardiovascular section of an in-house Critical Care Course which follows the American Association of Critical Care Nursing: Essentials of Critical Care On-Line learning modules. Each session ran over 3 weeks full time.
