Why study Primary Care Nursing at UBC Okanagan?
This program will prepare Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses to assume leadership roles and practice in primary care as a member of an integrated team. Students will learn and develop skills in the following areas:
- Concepts and frameworks foundational to the role of the primary care nurse in serving diverse populations, reducing health disparities, and promoting equity.
- Assessment approaches, care planning, and evaluation of care, for disease prevention, health promotion, and management of health conditions across the lifespan.
- Interprofessional collaborative care delivery models.
- Evidence-informed guidelines and care planning for providing quality care.
- Case management, care coordination, and system navigation for clients across the lifespan and continuum of care.
- Quality improvement principles as a way of supporting safe quality care.
Program Overview
The post-baccalaureate certificate is comprised of two lecture courses (3 credits each) and a practice placement (4 credits), for a total of 10 credits.
Courses
The online delivery model will allow Registered Nurses from across Canada to be admitted. To support capacity building, we encourage students to arrange practice placements in their local communities. See Dates and Deadlines under How to Apply for when courses are offered.
Exploring concepts and frameworks foundational to the role of the primary care nurse in serving diverse populations, reducing health disparities, and promoting equity. Examine competencies including assessment approaches, care planning, and evaluation of care, and build evidence informed knowledge of disease prevention, health promotion, and management of health conditions across the life span. Interprofessional collaborative care delivery models and modes of care will be examined. (3 credits)
Exploring evidence informed guidelines and care planning for providing quality care. Build knowledge of case management, care coordination, and system navigation for clients across the lifespan and continuum of care. Build knowledge of quality improvement principles as a way of supporting safe quality care. (3 credits)
Preceptored advanced practice experience provides opportunity for evidence-informed practice in an integrated team-based primary care context. Application of knowledge, skills, and abilities from related Primary Care Nursing theory course(s). Opportunity to work with interprofessional teams. (120 hours and 4 credits)
Careers and Outcomes
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Primary Care Nursing prepares you to work in primary health care settings, including:
- Family health teams
- Community health centres
- Physician-owned clinics
- Family medicine groups
- Primary care networks
In this role as a primary care or family practice nurse, you work as a member of an integrated team with family physicians, nurse practitioners, and other members of the health care team. The post-baccalaureate certificate prepares you to deliver on a broad range of responsibilities:
- Illness care
- Health promotion
- Disease prevention
- Rehabilitative care
- Supportive care
- Research involvement
- Quality improvement
Tuition and Fees
This is a 10-credit program and will cost approximately $2,100.00 to complete. Students register and pay for one course at a time. This means your cost for the program are spread out over the year.

Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting UBC’s general admission requirements, admission to the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program requires a current Registered Nurse or Psychiatric Registered Nurse practicing license within any Canadian Province.

Winter Term I (aka Sept Term) Online over 6 weeks (last week of Oct to first week of Dec) |
These courses are offered over 6 weeks and involves two class sessions each week.
There are 6 asynchronous classes on Tuesdays and 6 synchronous online classes on Thursdays from 1400-1700. |
| NRSG_O 435/535 Primary Care Nursing Preceptorship
Students must complete both NRSG_O 424/524 I and NRSG_O 425/525 before taking the preceptorship |
4 credits | Six times a year:
May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov/Dec Jan/Feb Mar/April |
Students are to complete 120 hours of preceptorship over 2 months.
This preceptorship may be done in a primary care setting near where you reside. Our Nursing Practice Placement Coordinator will work with you to identify a site and preceptor. |
*Students must have completed both NRSG 424/524 (3) Primary Care Nursing I and NRSG 425/525 (3) Advanced Primary Care Nursing II.
Registration
Once your eligibility to register has been established, you will receive an email from Enrolment Services. You may then register for each course online via Workday Student.
